The Maternal Newborn Regional Program for the Champlain LHIN has the goal to improve perinatal care through integration of patient focused planning.  Since early 2006, the Champlain LHIN and a network of health service providers and partners have been working together to create this integrated, regional program that will improve the health of mothers and their newborns in Champlain.  The integrated system will provide mothers and their babies with better access to high quality health services through more effective and efficient management and coordination of maternal and newborn services in the region.

Following much consultation, collaboration and cooperation, the plan for the Champlain Maternal Newborn Regional Program was released in November 2009, entitled “A Blueprint for Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies, Healthy Future”, which establishes the framework for the Program.  In January 2010, and based on the Blueprint, the Champlain LHIN Board issued an Integration Decision to begin implementation of the Regional Program.

This new Regional Program builds on a strong tradition of care for mothers, babies and families across the Champlain LHIN.  An integrated system will ensure consistent, standardized care across the region, providing mothers and babies with appropriate, timely access to clinical services at the right level of care, along the continuum.  Also, by developing a program of excellence, or a magnet program, the Regional Program will be able to compete in the global market and will have success in recruiting and retaining exceptional professionals.

In September 2010, the appointment of a Leadership Team to guide the work of the Network to further the vision, mission and goals of an integrated Maternal Newborn Regional Program for the Champlain region, was announced.

Dr. Wylam Faught, Regional Medical Lead – OB/GYN

Dr. Thierry Lacaze, Regional Medical Lead – Newborn

Carleen Ridley, Regional Director

This Leadership Team functions under the guidance of the Network and is accountable to the Champlain LHIN.

In October 2010, the Champlain Maternal Newborn Network held its inaugural meeting, bringing together an interdisciplinary representation of Health Service Providers, Partners, LHINs (Champlain and SE) and other key stakeholders committed to guide the ongoing development of the Regional Program.

The plan has been outlined and the structure has been put in place to move toward an integrated system for maternal newborn care that will ultimately improve the health of mothers and their newborns, and will ultimately give birth to a program of excellence, ensuring the best start to life for the children of the Champlain LHIN.
